Russell Lynn “Papa” Clelland, 81, of Aztec,NM. passed from this life to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016 at 4:10 a.m. at Life Care Center in Farmington, NM. He was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Fairmont, W. Va., to Earl Charles and Emil Carletta Clelland.
He attended Bridge Port Elementary School in West Virginia. He graduated from Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona. Russell served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Collett Destroyer, in the South Pacific. He worked at Duvall Corporation Copper Mine in Kingman, Arizona, at the Navajo Mine as an electrician on Draglines in Kirtland, New Mexico, he also worked for Utah International which converted into BHP, where he worked for the majority of his life. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and retired after 32 years of loyal service in 2003.
Russell married a beautiful lady and the love of his life, named Joyce LaFern Hale in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was later sealed in the St. George Temple in Southern Utah in 1980.
He was an active member of the National Rifle Association, the Lost Dutchman’s Mining Association, and the Remote-Controlled Airplanes Association.
Russell’s hobbies included prospecting, bowling, rifle and archery, hunting, fly fishing, camping, and motor cycle riding.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Charles and Emil Carletta Clelland; brothers, Glen Earl and Charles Edward Clelland; and sister, Dorothy May Lofstead.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce LaFern Clelland; sons, Dwayne Lee Clelland and Russell Lynn Clelland II; daughter, Cynthia LuAnn Tucker; and grandchildren, Brittany Satini, Christopher Tucker, Andrew Tucker, Colter Tucker, Jonathan Clelland, Brennen Clelland, and Katrina Clelland.
A visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 at the Farmington Funeral Home Chapel, 2111 W. Apache St. in Farmington followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. officiated by LeRoy Dugger. Interment will take place in spring of 2017. A reception will follow service at 1 p.m. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, N. Oliver Drive in Aztec.
